Hands on History

This month, we will be focusing on our local radio station, KCRW.  Children will learn about the station’s history, and be given a chance to explore the exhibit, listening to audio recordings from the station.  Afterward, children are invited to create and perform their own radio broadcast!

Starting in the 1940’s as a college radio station, early broadcasts ranged from concerts by the Santa Monica Symphony to discussion and music interpretation programs hosted by students and faculty. Later, as a growing NPR affiliate, the station was known for breaking musical acts and producing beloved programming such as “Which Way, L.A.?” and “To the Point.” Always at the forefront, the station was an early adopter of streaming broadcasts on the web. Today, the station is building a state of the art campus with performance spaces that will bring listeners into the studio as a live audience.

Children and their parents are invited to this free series held monthly on a Saturday morning from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Each session will include a short, age-appropriate history lesson in the galleries followed by a related craft or activity.

Each workshop is designed to be engaging and educational for elementary age (5 – 11 years) children. Topics for the workshops will rotate throughout the year to feature relevant, seasonal lessons and activities. RSVP is requested, registration is available at the door. Every workshop is offered free of charge.

By creating something with their hands related to the history topic of the month, children will further create memories based upon their history lessons. Families can expect a fun-filled learning hour at the museum!
