California’s Role in Women’s Suffrage

The ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 established the right to vote for white women in America. The suffrage movement’s success depended in large part on the groundswell of state initiatives and the organization of local women’s clubs at the turn of the century. As the sixth state to allow women to vote in 1911, California served as a turning point, with a population large enough to double the eligible women voters in the country.

Historian Nina Fresco Presents Arcadia Bandini Stearns de Baker

Sunday, September 28, 2025, at 4:00 PM rsvp@santamonicahistory.org

Historian, author Nina Fresco will present highlights from her extensive research into the complex life of Arcadia Bandini Stearns de Baker—an often-overlooked figure in Santa Monica’s founding story. Though her life intersected with some of the most prominent men of her era, Arcadia herself led a private existence, leaving behind few direct records. Through meticulous research and the recollections of those who knew her, Fresco has pieced together a vivid, more complete portrait of one of early California’s most fascinating women.
