On July 13, 2014, the Santa Monica History Museum will host their monthly Discover the History lecture series. July’s presentation will focus on the rise and fall of Pacific Ocean Park, including photographs and original ride designs and illustrations. Authors Christopher Merritt and Domenic Priore will present a spectacular history on Pacific Ocean Park, from its glamorous rise to spectacular fall from their new book, Pacific Ocean Park: The Rise and Fall of Los Angeles’ Space Age Nautical Pleasure Pier. Merritt currently designs amusement parks in Asia and also co-wrote Knott’s Preserved. Priore also co-wrote the celebrated volumes Riot on Sunset Strip, Pop Surf Culture, and Smile: The Story of Brian Wilson’s Lost Masterpiece. Original posters by poster artist Earl Newman will be on display in a small focus exhibit in the research library. A limited number of Pacific Ocean Park: The Rise and Fall of Los Angeles’ Space Age Nautical Pleasure Pier will be available for purchase at the Museum.
