Tours Exploring History!

Reserve a group tour at the Santa Monica History Museum!

The museum provides free, docent-led Discovery tours of its exhibitions year-round for schools!

Our tours bring history to life through original photographs, artifacts and documents.

Great for school field trips or small groups of friends!

Tours available Monday through Wednesday between 10am and 4pm.

Museum & Tour Policies

Confirmation: Please call the Museum to reconfirm the tour date at least two weeks prior to the tour.

Cancellation: If a tour must be canceled, please contact the Museum at least 48 hours in advance by calling (310) 395-2290. If the tour is canceled within 48 hours of the tour date, the tour deposit will be considered a charitable contribution to the Museum. Any additional payments will be refunded within 10 business days. If requested, the group tour may be rescheduled for a future date. The Santa Monica History Museum reserves the right to cancel any portion of the guided tour as circumstances warrant such as following L.A. County health guidelines. In such an event, the tour will be rescheduled for a later date, if requested.

Rules and Regulations:
If Lost or Late:  If you know you will be late, please call the Museum at (310) 395-2290. If late please be prepared for the possibility of a shortened program or cancellation of the tour. Plan to arrive with sufficient time to park and exit your vehicle(s) to ensure your tour begins at the scheduled time.

No Smoking: There is NO SMOKING permitted anywhere at or in the Museum.

Animals: No Pets are allowed on Museum property.

Schools / Youth Groups

Duration:  approximately 1 hour
Students (Kindergarten – 12th grade) and other youth groups
Free for all schools and youth groups in the Santa Monica Bay area
Please make reservations one month in advance.

These tours bring history to life by exposing students to original photographs, artifacts and documents that make young citizens aware of the city’s rich and diverse multicultural past. The museum continually provides historical information for classroom studies of Santa Monica history. High school students have participated in the museum’s preservation projects.

Teachers can schedule a class tour by calling the museum or filling out the online Tour Reservation Form.

Guidelines

Tour Reservation Guidelines:

  • Reservations: Make at least 1 month in advance
  • Dates: Monday through Wednesday only, between 10am and 4pm
  • Group Size: Maximum of 35 children per time slot. Fill out a separate form for each group of 35 children.
  • Cost: Tours are free for all schools and youth groups in the Santa Monica Bay area
  • Chaperones: Chaperones (age 16+) are required for all school group visits, one for every 6 children and MUST remain with the group at all times.

Group Size: We are able to fit a maximum of 35 children per time slot. Fill out a separate form for each group of 35 children. Chaperones (age 16+) are required for all group visits, one for every 6 children and MUST remain with the group at all times.

Take a virtual tour of one of our permanent galleries, The Old Santa Monica Room, where we explore the history of the Tongva Gabrielino Native Americans.

Groups

Duration: Approximately 1 hour
Type: Guided or Self-Guided
All ages

Guided group tours receive the personal attention of qualified museum guides who will interpret the unique history of Santa Monica.

Tour Reservation Guidelines:

  • Reservations: Make at least 1 month in advance
  • Dates:Monday through Wednesday only, between 10am and 4pm
  • Group Size: Maximum of 75 persons
  • Cost: $5 per person – Minimum fee of $55

To confirm your reservation a deposit check or credit card payment of $55 is required and must be received at least 30 days prior to the reserved tour date. The deposit will be applied to the total admission charge for the group tour. Group tour deposits are non- refundable. The balance of the tour fee is due on the day of the tour.
